American Alpine Club to Host the 50th Anniversary of Americans on Mount Everest
Annual fundraiser in San Francisco will reunite 1963 Everest legends and publicly honor 50 years of vertical inspiration
Golden, CO (October 15, 2012)—The American Alpine Club is thrilled to announce plans for its 2013 Annual Benefit Dinner: The 50th Anniversary of Americans on Mount Everest.
The upcoming Benefit Dinner will serve as the official celebration marking half a century of Americans on Everest. This special evening is open to the public and will be held at the Craneway Pavilion on the waterfront of the East Bay of San Francisco on February 23, 2013.
Every living member of the 1963 expedition team will reunite at the Dinner and present together for the first time in decades. These living legends have inspired generations of climbers and explorers: Tom Hornbein, Jim Whittaker, Norman Dyhrenfurth, Allen Auten, David Dingman, Maynard Miller, and Richard Pownall.
The Annual Benefit Dinner is the AAC’s signature and largest annual event. Coupling fine waterfront dining with a presentation by these Everest pioneers, the Dinner will bring together adventurers of every age for a rare and unforgettable evening. The first American to stand on top of the world was Jim Whittaker, who summited with Sherpa Nawang Gombu via the South Col route on May 1, 1963. Days afterward, on May 22, another team led by Tom Hornbein pioneered Everest’s West Ridge, and then descended to make the first-ever traverse of the mountain. Still today, both climbs are recognized as milestone achievements in human exploration.
