Job Description:
The American Alpine Club (AAC) has a position open for manager of the Grand Teton Climbers’ Ranch. The ranch is located within the boundaries of Grand Teton National Park in Moose, Wyoming, approximately 20 miles from the town of Jackson. The ranch manager is employed on a seasonal basis full-time from approximately May 15 through September 30. Housing is provided on the property as a benefit of the position, and the manager is required to live on the premises during the entire season. In general, the manager is required to assure that the ranch is at all times operated in compliance with the policies and procedures of the AAC and regulations of the National Park Service. The salary for the 2012 season is $3,000 per month. For the period April 15 to May 14 the manager will have part-time, off-site duties, and the salary for that period is $1,500. Any duties performed during the off-season outside the stated periods will be reimbursed at the rate of $18.00 per hour. The ranch manager is subject to the supervision of the Chairman of the AAC Climbers’ Ranch Committee and the AAC Executive Director and Operations Director. The manager is expected to fulfill the following specific duties:
Opening and Closing. The ranch is unoccupied and boarded-up throughout the winter. The manager accordingly must remove shutters, clean all the cabins, bathrooms, the kitchen, and other areas of the ranch, and assure that the electricity, water, telephone, and internet services are restarted, between May 15 and the beginning of Work Week on June 4. Work Week is June 4-8. Work Week is held each season prior to public opening at the beginning of June, and major maintenance and repairs are accomplished at that time with the assistance of approximately 25 volunteers, under the supervision of the manager. The ranch opens to the public on June 9, 2012. At the end of the season the manager must completely secure the ranch for the winter. The ranch closes to the public on September 12, 2012.
Registration and Check-out of Guests. This function includes monitoring the on-line reservations system through the website of the AAC, registering all guests upon arrival and checking guests out upon departure, collecting and maintaining a record of guest fees, providing information to guests concerning the facilities and features of both the Climbers’ Ranch and Grand Teton National Park, including regulations concerning food storage, backcountry camping registration, human waste disposal, and other matters as required by the Park. An ability to interact with guests and the public at all times in a friendly, courteous manner is indispensable.
Financial and Other Reports. A variety of financial and other reports concerning the operation of the ranch must be prepared and transmitted on a daily, monthly, or other periodic basis to the AAC office in Golden, Colorado and to the Business Resources office of Grand Teton National Park. Preparation and filing reports as required by the AAC and the Park Service in the form required and in a complete, accurate, and timely manner is a critical function of the ranch manager. Familiarity with the creation of Microsoft Excel spreadsheets is required.
Budget. The manager is expected to cooperate closely with the Ranch Committee Chairman and AAC staff in assuring that the Climbers’ Ranch operates within the limits of all categories of the operating budget.
Communications. The ranch is a facility of the AAC operated under a lease with the National Park Service. The manager is expected to be promptly available every day throughout the season to communicate by telephone, e-mail, and in person with a variety of officials and staff of both the AAC and Grand Teton National Park.
Preservation and Maintenance. The ranch occupies the site of the former Double Diamond Dude Ranch, which operated from 1924 to 1964. The main cabin containing the office, kitchen, and library is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The Concession Contract obligates the AAC to preserve the historical integrity of all structures on the property. Maintenance and repairs are regularly required for the plumbing and electrical facilities as well as the structures. Relevant mechanical skills are desirable. The ranch requires daily maintenance in the form of cleaning the cabins, bathrooms, showerhouse, cook shelter, kitchen, and other areas, including the grounds. The manager is also responsible for assuring that the landscape is preserved in its natural state.
Other Staff. The Climbers’ Ranch is staffed by the manager, a full-time assistant manager, and two full-time interns. All staff are required to reside for the season on the premises. Ranch staff are hired either upon the designation of the AAC or upon review and approval of the recommendations of the ranch manager. The manger supervises the staff of the ranch, which includes scheduling and assignment of duties.
