Privacy Policy

The American Alpine Club (the "AAC"), is committed to protecting privacy of data that you, the user ("you") submit to the web site of the AAC at www.americanalpineclub.org (the “Web Site”). To demonstrate this commitment, the AAC has adopted this privacy policy ("Privacy Policy"). Our policy is based on the principles of notice/awareness, choice/consent, access/participation and integrity/security in the collection and use of all information regarding our users and their activities at the Web Site. Please review this policy each time you use the Web Site or provide personal information to the AAC through the Web Site as it is subject to change at any time by the AAC. Though the AAC may place notice on the Web Site indicating that this Privacy Policy has been modified, it is your obligation to review the Privacy Policy from time to time. By accessing the Web Site, you are indicating your agreement to this Privacy Policy. Any changes to the Privacy Policy will be effective immediately upon posting to this Web Site.

Notice of our Policy

This policy tells you, among other things, what information the AAC gathers from you, how the AAC may use or disclose that information and the AAC’s efforts to protect it. What Types of Information are Collected and Why?

Information submitted by you

At times, the AAC may ask you to provide information about yourself and/or your climbing habits and preferences in order to better serve you. For example, some of the information collected may include name, employment status, address, phone number, e-mail address, type of climber (i.e., rock, ice, mountain, mixed, etc.), climbing-related survey information, and other relevant data. In addition, the AAC may collect financial information such as credit card accounts in connection with your voluntary participation in on-line purchases, fee payments or other financial transactions (together, "Financial Transactions") through the Web Site. Except for certain member only areas (the "Member Only Areas") of the Web Site, the AAC does not require this information to obtain access to any area of the Web Site. If any information is required for use of the Web Site, you will be notified on the Web Site prior to providing said information.

Information collected by Cookies

The AAC may also make use of web site "cookies" to help you use our services more easily and to help us continuously improve our Web Site and our service to you. A "cookie" is a small data file that a web site can send to your browser, which may then be stored on your hard drive to help our Web Site "remember" information about you when you return to our Web Site, such as the web pages you previously visited. Our cookies do not read data off of your hard drive, read cookie files created by other web sites or track any personal information about you. Our cookies do monitor site usage, including by collecting IP addresses of visitors to the Web Site. The AAC does not, however, collect any information which is user identifiable except as specifically provided by you. You may have the option of setting your browser to reject cookies; however, doing so may negatively impact upon the performance of the Web Site or restrict us in better serving your needs and interests. The "help" portion of the toolbar on most browsers will tell you how to prevent your browser from accepting new cookies, how to have the browser notify you when you receive a new cookie, or how to disable cookies altogether.

How Does The AAC Use My Information?

User Identification

The AAC will retain any information collected on a non-secure server so that on re-visiting the Web Site, your access can be more easily expedited. The AAC may use this information in an aggregated form to measure number of visits, average time spent on the Web Site, pages viewed, and other related statistics. AAC collects this information to measure the use of the Site and to improve the content of the Web Site.

The AAC may also provide access to AAC member’s personal profiles to the AAC’s verified members only. The member information available to other members is based upon data provided to the AAC by its members. Each AAC member also has the option to opt-out and not have his or her personal information available to other members. The Web Site will not, however, make this member information available to the general public or to non-AAC members. The AAC may use your personally identifying information to identify you as a user of the Web Site and to assist and speed the completion of any Financial Transactions on the Web Site. We may use your e-mail address to contact you directly regarding services or events of the AAC that we believe may be of interest to you. future visits to the

Disclosure of Aggregate Information

As AAC does not collect any Web Site user specific information except as explicitly voluntarily provide such information to the AAC (such as through your membership application), the AAC does not make any disclosure of user specific information obtained exclusively through the Web Site, either in user identifiable format or in an aggregate format. AAC may combine statistical results concerning the usage of the Web Site to prepare collective profiles of our users’ activities for our internal use. For example, AAC may track the number of our users who view certain pages or use certain features of the Web Site. Such information, and other information AAC derives from individual users' information allows AAC to continue to grow and provide you with quality information.

How Can I "Opt-out" of Receiving E-mail Communication?

We permit you to opt-out of receiving certain electronic communications from the AAC as a result of your use of the Web Site. We will not send unsolicited messages to you if you indicate that you do not wish to receive such messages. If you do not wish to receive unsolicited email messages from us, please access the "Profile" section of the Web Site and adjust your mailing preferences from the "yes" to the "no" option. AAC members may also opt-out of having their personal contact information available to other AAC members by going to Online Membership Directory, logging in, clicking on your name under “Profile” and change the entry for "Exclude From Directory" to "Yes." If you do not want your personal information used as otherwise detailed in this Privacy Policy, then you must not use the Web Site.

What Does AAC do to Keep This Site Secure?

Except in connection with credit card transactions, if applicable, we do not use industry-standard encryption methods to transmit your personal registration information from your computer to ours across the Internet.

Our Web Site may contain "links" to other sites which are not operated or controlled by the AAC, and the AAC cannot and are not responsible for maintaining your privacy once you leave our Web Site. If you provide any information to parties who operate web sites that are linked to or from the Web Site, different rules may apply to their collection, use or disclosure of your personal information. The AAC encourages you to review other web sites’ policies before revealing any sensitive or personal information. Under no circumstances shall the AAC have any liability whatsoever for the activities conducted by or at any web site accessed from or through the Web Site.

Regardless of the precautions taken by the AAC, the AAC does not or warrant the security of any information you transmit to us, and you transmit such information at your own risk.

Special Policy on Information Regarding Children (persons under 13 years of age)

The Web Site is not directed to children, and the AAC does not knowingly collect any personal information from children. If you are concerned about your child’s use of the Web Site, you may use web filtering technology to supervise or limit access to the Web Site.

General

This Privacy Policy is governed by the internal substantive laws of the State of Colorado in the United States, without regard to its conflict of laws principles. Jurisdiction for any claims arising under or out of this Privacy Policy shall lie exclusively with the state and federal courts within the State of Colorado. If any provision of this Privacy Policy is found to be invalid by a court having competent jurisdiction, the invalidity of such provision shall not affect the validity of the remaining provisions of this Privacy Policy, which shall remain in full force and effect. UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCES SHALL THE AAC HAVE ANY LIABILITY WHATSOEVER FOR ANY CONSEQUENTIAL, INCIDENTAL, INDIRECT OR SPECIAL DAMAGES ARISING OUT OF THE BREACH OF THIS PRIVACY POLICY, HOWEVER OCCASIONED.
