Blue Ridge Section - Section Meetings

Blue Ridge Section Meeting – Monday, October 22.

Presentation by Fred Beckey

7.30 P.M, Hearst Hall, National Cathedral School
Corner of Woodley Rd and Wisconsin Ave
Washington D.C.

Fred Beckey is one of the most famous North American climbers, with thousands of first ascents from Alaska to the desert Southwest. This will be a great slide show.

"Fred Beckey has achieved enduring recognition as the most imaginative, persistent, and thorough explorer and mountain investigator of the Cascade Range Wilderness. He was noted as "one of America's most colorful and eccentric mountaineers," and is unofficially recognized as the all-time world-record holder for the number of first ascents credited to one man. In addition to being the author of the Cascade Alpine Guide series, Beckey is also the author of Mountains of North America, The Range of Glaciers: Exploration and Survey of the North Cascades, and a personal narrative, Challenge of the North Cascades." (The Mountaineers)

Some of his most famous first ascents:

Forbidden Peak, Cascade Range - 1940
Devils Thumb, Alaska - 1946
Mount Hood's Yocum Ridge
North Buttress, Mount Shuksan - 1947
Mount Hunter (Alaska) - 1954
Mount Deborah - 1954
North Face of Mount Edith Cavell, Canada - 1961,
Northeast Buttress of Mount Slesse, British Columbia, Canada 1963

More Speakers? Events outside DC?

As you can imagine it is hard work finding speakers, and I don’t want to inflict my New Zealand climbing slides on the Blue Ridge section again (unless asked nicely). So I’m always interested in hearing from you if you would like to give a talk to the Blue Ridge Section.

Pretty much any subject related to climbing is ok….sole requirement is willingness and hopefully some good slides or digital photots (we can handle either).

BRS events have typically been held in DC. However, a number of section members live in other cities…so if you are interested in having a section meeting outside DC, please contact me.

On the same note, if you are interested in being involved in what I loosely call ‘running’ the section please get in touch…
