Daring to Dream on Annapurna

October 2007

Annapurna from the north.

AAC member Tonya Riggs is planning an expedition to Annapurna with a very small team in the fall of 2008. The Dare to Dream Expedition will raise money for the HERA Foundation to fight ovarian cancer.

Riggs, the business development director for AAC Industry Partner Trango in Boulder, Colorado, climbed Mt. Everest from the south side in 2006 and this spring attempted 7,525-meter Annapurna IV. She hopes to return and climb Annapurna IV during acclimatization for Annapurna.

Annapurna has only been climbed by three Americans, the first time during the 1978 all-women’s climb led by Arlene Blum. The 2008 team, consisting of Riggs, Brad Clement, and one or two other climbers, will attempt the north side of Annapurna, tentatively by the Dutch Rib. The expedition also will lead an approach trek for HERA donors and fund-raisers, and it is selling limited-edition ropes, jewelry, and shirts to raise money for the trip and for HERA.
