Yosemite: Our Pioneering Spirit

Fifty years ago, when Yvon Chouinard stood in the shadow of El Capitan, he brought with him a pioneering spirit that ushered the Golden Age of Yosemite Climbing. His first ascents of the North America Wall and Muir Wall redefined how to approach even the biggest climbs on earth more boldly: all free, with minimal gear and scant supplies. Yosemite was not only Chouinard’s proving ground for climbing, it was also the source of inspiration for a lifelong philosophy: to accomplish more with less, no matter the cost.

Frustrated with the single-use soft iron pitons of yesteryear, Chouinard began forging harder pitons that could be hammered into cracks again and again, minimizing the impact on our climbing landscapes. Yet in 1970 he realized that his increasingly successful business was further damaging the rock climbs he dearly loved. Essentially abandoning his main revenue source overnight, Chouinard again reinvented removable climbing gear in what is known as the Clean Climbing Revolution. It was a revolution that demanded climbers do more with less, and it spawned the extraordinary achievement that we see in Yosemite today.

His company Great Pacific Iron Works eventually became Patagonia, famous for its values of simplicity and sustainability and now a global leader in corporate responsibility.

Climbers today continue to pioneer “the impossible” in Yosemite and beyond, accomplishing incredible feats with less and less gear—a lesson that Chouinard continues to advocate in the world of business.

Please join the American Alpine Club in Denver on February 7–8, 2014 for a special weekend featuring Yvon Chouinard alongside climbing and business pioneers of yesterday and tomorrow.
