5/8/2012, GOLDEN—The American Alpine Club is excited to announce the hiring of its new Conservation and Advocacy Director. Leigh Goldberg was hired to fill this newly created position—which was formed in response to the expressed needs of the AAC membership.
“I am so honored to step into this new role for the Club and support climbing communities around the country. My mission is to empower all climbers to be leaders in sustainable outdoor recreation, conservation and stewardship,” said Leigh. “As far back as the late 19th century, American climbers have been well positioned to inspire passion and respect for our lands—not only inspiring fellow climbers, but everyone. Most people are quite moved when they learn that John Muir was not only Yosemite Valley’s first climbing bums but also the American Alpine Club’s second president. Our community has a long-standing tradition in conservation in America and beyond, and we have so much vital work to accomplish in the years ahead.”
Leigh is immediately focusing on how to best support the American Alpine Club’s local sections and chapters with consultation and funding for the conservation projects and policy concerns they face. She is also partnering with federal and state land managers and fellow advocacy and environmental organizations to help further shared goals of natural resource conservation and stewardship.
Leigh’s professional experience is diverse beginning with years in management consulting, marketing and public relations. Most recently, Leigh was the former Access Director of the American Mountain Guides Association where she managed the organization’s public policy, advocacy, and outreach initiatives on behalf of the mountain guiding and climbing instructor communities. As a climbing advocate, she worked on some of the major policy issues facing climbers while collaborating with land managers such as Denali National Park, Mount Rainier, Yosemite and the Black Canyon of the Gunnison. Leigh earned her Bachelor of Arts degree in Sociology from Princeton University.
