Conservation and Advocacy Director

ORGANIZATIONAL INFORMATION:

Vision: The AAC unites climbers to advance the climbing way of life

Mission:  We provide knowledge and inspiration, conservation and advocacy, and logistical support for the climbing community

The AAC is a not-for-profit 501 (c) 3 organization supported by gifts and grants from individuals, corporations and foundations, income from restricted endowments, membership dues, and the sale of merchandise and publications.

POSITION OBJECTIVE:

The Conservation and Advocacy Director will drive and oversee all aspects of conservation and advocacy at the AAC.

S/he will be considered successful if s/he prioritizes these main objectives:

• Work closely with regional staff and volunteers to market, vet, and award all conservation and research grants to support conservation projects at the local level
• Work with AAC sections and other organizations to achieve and articulate positions on governmental policies that support climbing in the U.S. and, secondarily, abroad
• Work closely with the AAC Information & Marketing team to tell the story of our work in conservation and advocacy

SPECIFIC

RESPONSIBILITIES:

The Conservation and Advocacy Director must guide a national policy while responding to, prioritizing, and supporting the needs of local sections and chapters.

Executive Leadership

The Conservation and Advocacy Director participates with the Executive Director, the senior staff, and the Senior Leadership Team of the Board to set the annual budget and plan for the Club.

Supervision

The Conservation and Advocacy Director has no direct reports but will work with peers, their staff(s), and volunteers to achieve goals. S/he must work with:

• regional staff and volunteers to determine the AAC regional agenda
• other organizations to set the national agenda
• AAC Members/volunteers as needed
• the community programs team to bring local projects to completion
• the development staff to cultivate funding and steward donors dedicated toward conservation and public policy
• the Executive Director as the AAC’s lead spokesperson on national policy issues 

REPORTING

RELATIONSHIP:

The Conservation and Advocacy Director reports to AAC Executive Director, Phil Powers, and works closely with the Conservation and Advocacy Committee of the Board.

CANDIDATE COMPETENCIES/ QUALIFICATIONS:

We seek candidates with drive and ambition who are interested in building on a conservation and advocacy program that has largely been managed by volunteers and the Executive Director. We expect extraordinary written and oral communication skills and several years of successful experience working with state and/or federal agencies. A passion for and knowledge of the outdoors and the climbing community will be important as well.

COMPENSATION:

Compensation will be competitive and commensurate with experience.
