Applicants Wanted for Live Your Dream Grants

4/19/2012:

—New Program Awards “Everyday Climbers” Funds to Pursue Climbing Ambitions—

The American Alpine Club is excited to launch an entirely new kind of climbing grant, born from the idea that the most important climbs are our own.

Live Your Dream Grants provide seed money to climbers—of all disciplines, ages, and abilities—who have ambitions to expand their climbing horizons. This year the AAC is launching the program with $12,000, which will be distributed to at least a dozen individuals or small teams in pursuit of their personal climbing dreams. The emphasis of the grant is on projects that have significant positive impact on grantees’ progressions as climbers.

In most cases, grants will fall in the $300–$1,000 range. They’re not designed to fund all of an expedition or trip, just support it and help to make the awardee’s dreams a reality. Dreams can take many forms, but here are a few examples: a sport climber learning to trad climb, a first trip to climb El Capitan, a strong gym climber traveling to a faraway competition, a budding mountaineer’s first foray onto a big mountain like Rainier, a boulderer visiting a mecca like Hueco Tanks for the first time.

“These grants are an exciting departure from our history”, said AAC Information & Marketing Director Erik Lambert. “We’ve been providing financial support for cutting-edge and exploratory ascents for decades. While important to advancing the upper fringe of our sport, those grants do not always resonate with most of our members—the weekend warriors. This program is designed to speak to all climbers who have dreams, and to reward some of those climbers, no matter their ability level."

“This is for all the climbers I know who have been dreaming of ‘that next cool trip’ but haven’t taken it yet.”

Live Your Dream Grants are developed and administered locally with community support. Each Region of the American Alpine Club’s membership has its own program; there are separate Live Your Dream programs in the Northwest, Southwest, Rockies, Central, Northeast, and Southeast regions of the country. Application periods vary by region, but many are quickly approaching (May 1 and June 1).

Applicants do not have to be an AAC member to apply for a Live Your Dream Grant. However, only AAC members can collect awards. Access application forms and find out more on the American Alpine Club’s grants pages.
