Southeast Region
AAC Regional and Section News Welcome to the Southeast! A panacea of world-class climbing— the Red River Gorge KY, New River Gorge WV, Linville Gorge and Looking Glass NC, Foster Falls, T-Wall, Obed, and Stone Fort TN, Horse Pens 40 and Little River Canyon in AL, and Rocktown in GA just to name a few. From sandstone boulders to granite domes, the southeast is geologically diverse, and offers unique trad, sport, and bouldering. Contrary to popular belief, one can even ice climb here! While our region is famed for our “southern hospitality," our climbing culture is, in some ways, an unusually guarded one. Access and inclusion issues render some of our region's best climbing impenetrable to outsiders. “Secret Crags" is our region's middle name. Until these issues are resolved, locals intend to keep it that way. Local and national climbing organizations, together, are making huge strides to resolve access issues by working with land mangers and owners, leasing land, and in some instances all-out purchasing acreage to protect our climbing areas.

Meet the Southeast Regional Manager
piggys.jpegLisa Hummel:Originally from Milwaukee, WI, Lisa has spent over the last decade (more or less) living and climbing in the Southeast. She began climbing while studying Cultural Anthropology at Appalachian State University in Boone, NC. While the southeast is at the core of Lisa's climbing experience, occasionally traveling nationally and internationally to climb continues to fuel her passion for being part of the amazing climbing community. Locally, regionally, nationally, and internationally, climbers share similar stories, goals, and values that Lisa relates to.
As the AAC's Southeast Regional Manager, Lisa continues her commitment and passion for the climbing community through local climber gatherings, support of meaningful projects, and partnerships with local climbing organizations. Connecting with fellow climbers, volunteers, and local climbing organizations crystalize both the importance of, and responsibility for our collective climbing community; looking out for one another, perpetuating good ethics, and challenging each other to live our dreams keeps us strong…so do push-ups.

The Washington DC Section has roughly 300 members in DC, Maryland and Virginia. We hold section meetings 3-4 times a year at the Cleveland Public Library, 3310 Connecticut Ave. N.W., Washington DC. Local rock climbing events are held at Great Falls and Carderock, National Parks just outside the DC metro area, and other areas such as the New River Gorge and Seneca Rocks in WV. Members' interests also include ice climbing, alpine climbing, ski-touring and local gym climbing.

Southern Appalachian Section
Drive down the spine of the Southern Appalachians and discover a life time of climbing challenge. Start in West Virginia and the pump of Seneca Rocks. Head south to the AAC campground at the New and tackle the 1600 sport and trad routes around the New River Gorge. Slip down the Blue Ridge into North Carolina for Stone Mountain's friction. Try the wilderness experience of Linville Gorge, the grade V aid lines at Looking Glass and the technical face, splitter cracks and superb bouldering of Rumbling Bald. Come back in the winter to chase our ephemeral southern ice!

Deep South Section
The heart of the Deep South--Tennessee, Alabama, and Georgia may best be described as the place where the trad routes seem more like sport routes, the sport routes seem more like boulder problems, and the boulder problems seem more like a golf course--perhaps because some of them are on a golf course. Immediately west of the Appalachians you'll find an almost year round climbing season, with bouldering in Rock Town, GA, Stone Fort, TN, and HP40, AL. Looking Glass in Georgia and T-Wall in Tennessee will ensure your cams get some wear, and there are sport routes abound from Foster Falls and the Obed TN, to Sand Rock AL. There is something for everyone and we have only just scratched the surface!
