Lyman Spitzer Award recipient Scott Decapio offers this brief write-up of a highly successful trip to the China/Kyrgyzstan border.  Read on for several amazing FA's!  


Scott Decapio (USA) and Sean Isaac (Canada),  spent the month of July 2001 exploring the remote and seldom visited West Kokshaal-Tau range on the border of Kyrgyzstan and China. Snapshots from Kyrgyzstan: Avalanche Perceptions in Central Asia

Read the full report (and see the amazing photos!) provided by Ann Piersall, a 2010 recipient of the AAC Nikwax Alpine Bellwether Grant, in the December 2010 edition of the Avalanche Review (it's on page 28). Her project evaluated glaciation and climate change in the At-Bashy Range, a constitute range of the Tien Shan, located in Kyrgyzstan. It's quite an interesting read, be sure to check it out!

Ski Descents by MFF Recipients

This two part trip report was written by Mountain Fellowship Fund Recipients Kyle Amstadter and Martin Strasser. Kyle and Martin traveled to Kyrgyzstan to climb some big peaks and ski untouched faces. Read on for their exciting tale!


After warming up with a telemark descent of a subsidiary peak of Korona in Ala-Archa, Martin Strasser and I headed for the Kuilu range (see Pat Littlejohn’s description, AAJ 2001).  We travelled to base camp (ca. 3300m) via a retired Soviet military vehicle, crossing the rivers without problem.
