UPDATE — April 3rd, 2014.
It has been an especially severe winter in the North East, which has worked both for and against the construction of the campground.
The heavy snow cover has insulated the ground allowing it to remain somewhat thawed. This enabled the site contractor to excavate, grade and construct tent platforms, campsite pathways and the septic fields. This same snow, however negatively impacted the progress of the building contractor and has delayed the progress on the residence and bathhouse buildings. The recent improvement in the weather, have allowed buildings to be framed and made weather tight.
Due to these weather related factors the revised completion date for the construction phase of the Campground is early Fall, and the plan is to open the Campground to the public as soon thereafter as possible.
The campground will be operated in a partnership between the American Alpine Club and the Mohonk Preserve.
Since 2006, in partnership with The Mohonk Preserve, the New York State Office of Parks, Recreation, and Historic Preservation, and the Palisades Interstate Park Commission, the American Alpine Club has been working toward the creation of a campground near the popular climbing area, the Shawangunks—or "The Gunks" for short.
Location: The campground is a short walk from the Mohonk Preserve Visitor Center near the Trapps and Near Trapps Climbing as well as Uberfall climbing area.
Number of campsites: 50 campsites
Campground acreage: 50 acres
Amenities include: Campground amenities will include an outdoor central gathering and cooking area, bathhouse facilities, and indoor space for visitors to gather during rainy weather.
Expected opening date: Fall 2014
