Abbreviated campground history:
Since 2006, in partnership with The Mohonk Preserve, the New York State Office of Parks, Recreation, and Historic Preservation, the Palisades Interstate Park Commission, and the American Alpine Club has been working toward the creation of a campground near the popular Shawangunk climbing area.

The Palisades Interstate Park Commission completed construction of the campground in late 2014 and turned it over to The Mohonk Preserve and the American Alpine Club who will operate the facility in partnership.

Accommodations

  • $24/night per campsite for AAC and Mohonk Preserve members; $38/night per campsite for non-members
  • Limit of 4 people per campsite
  • Maximum of 2 , 2 person tents per campsite
  • 50 tent sites, with parking for one vehicle per site, additional parking is available off site.
  • Open May 15, 2015 through mid-November, 2015, weather permitting (Opening date in 2016 will be earlier in the year)
  • Office hours: 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Sunday through Thursday; 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. Friday and Saturday
  • No RV's or large vehicles are allowed
  • Amenities include: pay showers, covered pavilion, fire ring, drinking water and more
  • Please check-in at the Campground office for your campsite assignment
  • Late arrivals- Please see dry erase board by the office for your campsite assignment

Policies:

Tents must be pitched on provided tent platforms

Dogs
Dogs must remain on a leash and be supervised at all times. Dogs are permitted in your campsite and on roads only. Dogs are not permitted in any communal spaces including the pavilion, fire ring and bathhouse. Owners must clean up after their dogs.

Firearms
Firearms are permitted at the Gunks Campground during hunting season, but must be stored in a vehicle inside a locked gun case. No hunting or shooting is permitted anywhere on the Campground property.

Cancellations
There is no cancellation charge and 100% of deposit is refunded if notice is received more than 30 days in advance of arrival date. 50% of deposit refunded if cancellation notice is received between 7 and 30 days of arrival date. No deposit refunded if cancellation notice is received within 7 days of arrival date. Reservations for multiple days are automatically cancelled without refund unless notice of late arrival is provided to the ranch by 11:00 A.M. on the second day of the reservation.

Late Arrivals
If arriving after Campground office hours, your last name and assigned campsite will be listed on a dry erase board just left of the Campground office door.
Please check in first thing the next morning.

Smoking
Smoking is not permitted in communal areas. Please dispose of cigarette butts properly.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does it cost to climb in the Mohonk Preserve?

There is a daily charge of $17 for climbers, bikers, and horseback riders and $12 for hikers. Annual memberships are also available.

How close is the campsite to the climbing?

It is less than a five minute drive to the parking lots at the Mohonk Preserve or a 20 minute walk to the base of the cliff.

Are black bears an issue in the area?

Due to the large black bear presence in the area, we ask that you keep all food and toiletries locked in your car or in one of the bear boxes we have provided.

When are quiet hours?
Campground quiet hours are between 10 p.m. and 7 a.m.

Are showers available for people not staying at the campground?

Yes, showers are available for a fee for those not staying at the campground. Please see staff if you need change.

How can I find a guide?

The AAC partners with local guide company Alpine Endeavors to provide members guide services at a discount. There are many other guide services in the area, including Eastern Mountain Sports, Mountain Skills Climbing Guides, and High Xposure Adventures.

Where can I find groceries and other supplies nearby?

Groceries, gas, and other supplies can be found in the town of New Paltz, located eight miles away. Rock and Snow is a local gear store in New Paltz for any of your gear needs.

Are there laundry facilities at the campground?

No, but there are several laundromats located in New Paltz.

Can I have a fire at my campsite?

Fires are not permitted at individual campsites, but there is a community fire pit near the pavilion.

Are there hook-ups available for RV's?
No, RV's are not allowed at the campground, and there are no hook-ups available at the campground. Generators are also prohibited. No vehicles over 22 feet allowed, but small pop-ups/campers are allowed if space is available.

Are there ADA accessible campsites?
Yes, there are several ADA accessible sites, please request an ADA site in the notes section when making an reservation .

What is the parking like at the Gunks Campground?

Parking is limited. There is a one car per site rule. A limited amount of overflow parking is available at an additional charge. Free overflow parking is located at the Mohonk Preserve Visitors Center. This is a short walk to the campground.

Is there wifi available?

Not yet, but we hope to have wifi for guest by late summer 2015.

If it rains can I tie tarps to the trees to cover my picnic table?

Tying ropes to tree damages the trees and can possibly kill the tree in the long run, if the weather is bad, please feel free to use the Pavilion building to cook under, there is plenty of space and dish washing sinks are right there.
