Ueli Steck Speaking Tour Presented by Alpina Watches: Boulder

  • University of Colorado

The AAC is excited to announce a speaking tour with legendary speed climber Ueli Steck!

This fall the AAC is partnering with Alpina Watches to bring Ueli 'The Swiss Machine' Steck to 10 cities across the country. Ueli will present a visually stunning and interactive slideshow about his experiences climbing the world's largest mountains, setting speed records without oxygen, his daring 82 Summits Challenge and recent trip to the Himalaya.

Best known for his record shattering speed ascent of the Eiger, Ueli has never stopped pushing boundaries. On this tour he will share the triumphs and tragedies of his daring 82 Summits Challenge. In the summer of 2015, Ueli embarked upon the mammoth task of climbing 82 peaks, all 4,000+ meters, under his own power. He did so in just 62 days, but not without facing some serious obstacles along the way.

He will also tell of his recent expedition in the Himalaya, where he discovered Alex Lowe's body and got back to his roots of efficiently climbing big peaks.

Climbing for ROMP

Climbing for ROMP (Range of Motion Project) was established as a fundraiser in 2015 to commemorate the 25th anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act. The inaugural event included 22 climbs in 13 countries with over 150 climbers. This year we are pushing people even further and creating more opportunities for access to prosthetic care globally.

There are two Colorado events scheduled on July 23rd. Come out and be a part of one of these climbs and help raise awareness with ROMP.

Ten Sleep Climbing Festival

Ten Sleep, Wyoming has become one of America's great pocket pulling, summer destination climbing areas. Every summer a small band of faithful route developers would host their buddies and traveling climbers at the "Ten Sleep Climbers Festival" and every year it got a little bit bigger.

Enter the Bighorn Climbers Coalition. This Local Climbing Organization has taken the fest on and moved it from the big boulder campsite to the Ten Sleep Brewery in town. Enjoy a fun evening of brews, music, games and hanging with the Ten Sleep community this July!!!

Doors Open at 7PM - Film Starts at 7:30PM

Tickets: $10 Advance, $12 at the door

Purchase tickets: http://shop.americanalpineclub.org/products/skiing-everest

100% of the proceeds will go to the American Alpine Club. Special introduction and Q&A session with filmmaker Mike Marolt.

Skiing Everest is an American adventure documentary directed by Les Guthman and Mike Marolt; written by Les Guthman, and featuring high-altitude skiers Mike Marolt, Steve Marolt, John Callaghan, Jim Gile, Hans Kammerlander, Chris Davenport, Laura Bakos, Mark Newcomb and Fredrik Ericsson, who died skiing on K2 in 2010.

Filmed by Mike Marolt over ten years, Skiing Everest tells the story of a group of close friends, lead by Marolt and his twin brother Steve, who grew up in Aspen, Colorado and went on to become the first skiers from the Western Hemisphere to ski from above 8,000 meters (26,247 ft.) when they skied from the summit of Shisha Pangma in Tibet in 2000, and then challenged the highest slopes in the world on Mt. Everest and Cho Oyu.

The film follows the Marolts and their childhood friends Jim Gile, and John Callahan, who was an Olympic cross-country skier, on skiing expeditions into the Death Zone above 26,000 ft., without using bottled oxygen. At the top of the world, they lock into their skis and challenge the most dangerous slopes in the world.

Skiing Everest also tells the history of high altitude skiing, dating back to the 1930s, and includes interviews with Hans Kammerlander, who was the first to ski from the summit of Everest; Laura Bakos, the first woman to ski from the summit of an 8,000 m. peak] and Chris Davenport, the two-time world extreme skiing champion, who is an avid ski mountaineer as well. And it tells the Marolts' personal story: the sons of U.S. Olympic skier Max Marolt, who grew up in Aspen, before it became an internationally famous ski destination and who took to skiing in the hope of escaping what was an isolated, decaying former mining town.
