This 3-day grassroots climbing festival brings climbers both fresh-faced and crusty to the mellow pockets and techy crimps of Smith’s unique dimpled rock. Test your metal at the birthplace of sport climbing, and take the opportunity to connect and learn with this incredible and welcoming community! 

On top of climbing we’ve got Rock N’ Run Portland hosting an early morning 5k run on Saturday and Sunday morning! When you’re back at camp, enjoy local brews from Wild Basin & Bigfoot Beverages, grab tasty meals from the local food trucks, peruse the silent auction and raffle for incredible deals on top-end gear, enjoy free Saturday and Sunday morning breakfasts provided by Climbers for Christ, all this within eyesight of beautiful Smith Rock State Park.

    Join Alan Watts, the one climber most familiar with -- and responsible for -- Smith Rock's climb to prominence as an international sport climbing destination. Watts will take you on a climbing history tour of Smith Rock climbing areas. Alan's entire climbing career is inextricably entwined with the recent past of Smith Rock, the remote central Oregon crag that now ranks among the world's elite climbing destinations.

    Join award-winning alpinist Graham Zimmerman for a discussion of his memoir A Fine Line: Searching for Balance Among Mountains. Learn how Graham reconciles the love of outdoor adventure with the inevitability of loss in high-risk sports and his social responsibilities as a husband, climate advocate, and community leader.

    About the speaker:

    As a professional climber, GRAHAM ZIMMERMAN is one of the most acclaimed alpinists of his generation. After graduating from Otago University in 2007 with a degree in geography, he focused on alpinism, a pursuit that has taken him on expeditions to Alaska, Patagonia, Kyrgyzstan, Pakistan, and all over the lower 48 and Canada. His awards include the 2020 Piolet d’Or, 2016 Cutting Edge Award for Excellence in Alpine Climbing, 2014 Piolet d’Or Top 5 Finalist, and 2010 New Zealand Alpinist of the Year. Dedicated to using his platform for good, he holds leadership roles in a range of nonprofits and outdoor companies, including the American Alpine Club and Protect Our Winters. He lives in Bend, Oregon with his wife, Shannon, and their dog, Pebble.

    HDCA is a collective of climbers in Central Oregon that protects and expands climbing access while keeping our natural lands safe and beautiful. They’ll give updates on the Smith Rock re-bolting project, talk about what they do for our community and how you can help support their efforts.

    As a Mexican-American, Natalie Connell spent her life balancing two cultural identities, with neither fitting quite right on its own, but through art and climbing, she’s found her rightful place as the bridge between the two.

    A talk about bringing a mentorship program to Kenya. A Global Climbing initiative program that brought an empowerment program to Climbing Life Kenya. That brought resources to bring the best practices of teaching climbing to Kenya. The emotional and physical components were left behind. Allowing Climbing Life Kenya to be thriving program to will empower more Kenya’s not only in climbing but in life as a way of self discovery.

2023 CLINICS

FRIDAY 1/2 DAY CLINICS

  • In this clinic you will gain a more complete understanding of fear and stress in your body, reframe your responses as adaptable, and learn about specific tools you can use to start to change this experience for yourself. This clinic goes WAY beyond practice falls. This clinic is taught by Karly Rager (Athlete for Trango and Rab, CSCS, AMGA SPI, Behavior Change Specialist, founder of Project Direct Coaching [IG + Web]). She is incredibly passionate about the role our mental world plays in our climbing progression and cannot wait to help you with your head game on rock! Come with an open mind!

    SKILL LEVEL:. All climbing skill levels welcome!

  • Climbing outside for the first time can be a little intimidating. Take the skills you have learned in the gym and apply them to an outdoor setting. Also learn the additional skills you will need to be successful outside like cleaning anchors, stick clipping, reading a guidebook, picking routes, outdoor climbing ethics and considerations.

    SKILL LEVEL: Must be able to top rope belay. All climbing skill levels welcome!

    GEAR REQUIRED: Harness, shoes, helmet, belay device

    PARTICIPANT CAP: 10

  • There is a lot of complicated information out there about anchor systems! So let's learn to spot the "good from the bad" and what is essential in your system. In this clinic, Marcus will explain basic anchors systems, discuss what matters most when building anchors, and how to keep a team secure on climbs. This clinic focuses on the simplicity of anchors and will help answer questions about using different anchor setups. Participants will walk away with new knowledge, regardless of their experience levels!

    SKILL LEVEL: All levels

    GEAR REQUIRED: Gear is provided.

SATURDAY FULL DAY CLINICS

  • We've all felt the burn as we get pumped on routes in Smith! Get some tips and take some whips with the pros! This clinic will focus on warming up properly, making the most out of “rest stances,” committing to movement and recovery in between burns. Who should take this clinic? Any climber looking for techniques to improve their endurance climbing.

    SKILL LEVEL: Climbing 5.11 and higher

    GEAR REQUIRED: Harness, helmet, shoes, belay device

    PARTICIPANT CAP: 10

  • This class breaks down everything you need to know to get started trad climbing. You’ll learn to place gear, mock lead and create a solid foundation for your first lead. We will cover setting up trad anchors as well.

    SKILL LEVEL: Comfortable lead climbing up to 5.9 outdoors

    GEAR REQUIRED: All trad gear is provided. Participants will need their own harness, helmet, shoes & belay device. If you have a quad-length sling, bring this to practice on but it’s not required.

    PARTICIPANT CAP: 10

  • In this clinic, Anna Hazelnutt and Karly Rager will work with you on our skills in the realm of vertical climbing. Body positioning, counterbalancing, route reading, and more advanced footwork will be covered in this clinic in the place where vertical climbing is famous! This is a great clinic for those who want to learn more about the ways you can make vertical terrain feel more like a dance!

    SKILL LEVEL: Comfortable climbing 5.10

    GEAR REQUIRED: Harness, shoes, helmet, belay device

    PARTICIPANT CAP: 10

  • Want to learn how to project a route? OR want to learn better projecting skills so you can take on your next project with more confidence? Projecting is a process that involves a lot of patience, strategy, success and failure. In this clinic, you will learn how to take on a project by breaking down the big goal of sending into smaller, more manageable steps. You will learn that failure is just a part of the process, and what really matters is that you have a plan for how to fail better.. and to have fun along the way!

    SKILL LEVEL: Intermediate- Must be able to lead at least 5.9 sport

    About Molly: Molly Mitchel has been climbing for 12 years and is based out of Boulder, CO. She is the 7th woman in the world to climb 5.14 trad: “China Doll,” a 5.14a R. She was featured on the 2020 cover of Rock & Ice and has achieved several First Ascents and First Female Ascents. Through this, Molly has been open in sharing that she has an anxiety disorder and how climbing has helped her find purpose. She loves sharing what she’s learned with others who want to learn. Along with these impressive career highlights, Molly is also a superb yodeler.

  • Build confidence and learn valuable techniques for making a smooth transition from climbing on plastic to stone. Spend a day at the cliffs learning new skills for the outdoors in areas like safety and techniques like route-finding, movement, fear management but also outdoor necessities like leave no trace and environmental principles and much more.

    SKILL LEVEL: All Levels

    GEAR REQUIRED: Harness, shoes, helmet, belay device. Bring any other outdoor equipment you want to learn how to use.

    Also bring: Water, lunch/snacks, good hiking shoes

  • Adaptive climbing aims to make rock climbing more accessible for people with disabilities through the use of specialized techniques and equipment. The clinic will be run by Dave Egan, and Craig Demartino from Adaptive Adventures. This clinic is an opportunity to climb with other adaptive athletes and try out different systems and techniques to figure out what works for you.

    Clinic participants will complete a questionnaire upon registration to help determine the assistance they need to have a comfortable day climbing outside, and Dave or Craig will coordinate a plan for success.

    SKILL LEVEL: Open to all abilities and experience levels.

    GEAR REQUIRED: Harness, helmet, and shoes

  • This clinic will be focused on learning specific crack climbing techniques from finger locks to hand jams, ring locks to fists and everything in between. We’ll break down these techniques into easily digestible steps and you’ll have the opportunity to practice on the beautiful basalt cracks of the Lower Gorge. OUT in the Wild strives to provide inclusive and equitable outdoor programs for all, specifically focused on uplifting the LGBTQIA2S+ Community. This clinic is open to all and we welcome you to join us in building community together.

    SKILL LEVEL: Ability to top rope belay and climb up to 5.10a indoors

    GEAR REQUIRED: Harness, helmet, shoes, belay device. If you need a harness or helmet, please let us know.

    PARTICIPANT CAP: 10

  • This intro to multi-pitch climbing will cover everything transitioning from seconding to leading, climbing to descending, building anchors for the ascent and the descent, hauling a pack, planning a route, and much more. The goal will be to give the participants the tools they need to successfully climb both big and small multi-pitch climbs on their own, with confidence and sound decision making.

    SKILL LEVEL: Comfortable climbing at least 5.7

    GEAR REQUIRED: Harness, helmet, shoes, belay device

    PARTICIPANT CAP: 10


2023 WORKSHOPS + MEET UPS

  • Grab your climbing shoes and meet some of your fellow climbers during the Climb United Meet-up! Whatever your skill level or background, let's get together for some climbing and good conversation. This session will be facilitated by The American Alpine Club and the Ladies Climbing Coalition. Please note that this is not a guided session and no climbing instruction will be provided. Please bring your personal climbing gear if you have it.

    Who Is this for: We encourage participation from BIPOC, LGBTQ+, Plus Size climbers and allies.

    When: Saturday from 9am - 4pm

    Cost: FREE, registration required

  • Learn the top 5 fueling mistakes climbers make, and how to eat right to support your climbing and send all sends. This clinic is taught by a leading expert in climbing nutrition. Marisa is a board certified sports dietitian, author of Nutrition for Climbers: Fuel for the Send, and has worked with all levels of climbers from recreational to elite.

    Who is this for: Anyone and any body.

    When: Saturday from 8:00am -9:00am

    Cost: $35, registration required

    About Marisa: Marisa Michael, MSc, RDN, CSSD is a registered dietitian with a master's degree in sports nutrition and the International Olympic Committee's Diploma in Sports Nutrition. She has conducted and published original climbing nutrition and eating disorder research and is the author of Nutrition for Climbers: Fuel for the Send as well as several Climbing Magazine articles. Marisa serves on the USA Climbing Medical Committee. She's been on TrainingBeta and the Curious Climber podcasts and is the owner of Real Nutrition, LLC in Portland, Oregon.     This LGBTQIA2S+ Affinity meet-up is meant for climbers of all skill levels WITH prior climbing experience, to come together to learn a wide variety of skills, all within an inclusive community atmosphere. We’ll spend the day climbing together in an area with a wide range of styles and grades. This clinic will include ground school topics, climbing movement coaching and more, catered to participant’s interests! Bring your questions and curiosity!

    SKILL LEVEL: Ability to top rope belay and prior climbing experience (indoor or outdoor)

    GEAR REQUIRED: Participants will need their own climbing shoes, harnesses and helmets. If you need a harness or helmet please reach out prior to the event.

10136 NE Crooked River Drive, Terrebonne, OR. Camping is included in your General Weekend Pass.

PARKING

  • You must have a Smith Rock Craggin’ Classic Parking Pass to park at the event site.

  • Space is limited!

  • One parking pass is required per vehicle.

  • We encourage carpooling, so before you register, find a carpooling buddy or two and then just one of you will need to purchase a parking pass.

  • Smith Rock Park Pass and State Park Pass cannot be used for parking at this event.

FOOD

Saturday and Sunday breakfasts are included in your General Weekend Pass ticket (thanks to Climbers for Christ). Food will be available for purchase on Friday & Saturday nights from Fresco & Fryed and The Bob (gluten free and vegetarian options available). Need an energy boost before or after the crag? Grillo’s Pickles is sponsoring a Pickle Party with cold, refreshing pickles Saturday at the beverage station! All other food is on the attendees to provide and we’ll have designated cooking sites available. Potable water will be available at the campsite.

At Smith Rock Craggin’ we pride ourselves on being a super earth friendly event! To help, we’re providing everyone with a reusable cup! We’d like you to help us by bringing your own plate/silverware and camp chairs! This small thing will have a big impact on the amount of waste produced by the event! 

ACCESSIBILITY

We truly want everyone to feel comfortable and able to participate fully at our events, though there are certain accommodations that will be determined by the events' locations and other factors. Not all clinics are accessible. While not all climbing areas at Smith Rock State Park are accessible, there is a wheelchair accessible trail to some of the main areas. More info is linked here.

The Craggin’ Classic venue is a flat but rough field. We will have ADA accessible porta-potties onsite. Please email event coordinators directly if there are ways we can make this experience more positive for you and your unique needs or with any questions.

DOGS

PETS UPDATE!! Hello to all of you with 4 (or 3) legged little friends wanting to know if your sweet pet can join you for the event. Unfortunately, pets are NOT ALLOWED at the event this year. Our event is in a new location and it is a part of our agreement that we cannot have pets on the property. We know this is sad news but we hope you understand!
